Welcome to Rocky Mountain School, in Goodnews Bay, Alaska. We are located at the head of Goodnews Bay about 100 air miles south of Bethel. Our community has about 250 residents and our school has about 70 students in K-12. The five classroom teachers and one special education teacher serve children in multi-ages classes. We have a dance group that practices each Friday afternoon, a high school robotics team that qualified for the state competition and a Native Youth Olympics team. The goal is to have more students qualify for sporting events.
The beauty of the surrounding area is immense; we are surrounded by tundra teaming with life, snow-covered mountains, and a crystal clear river where one can catch all five species of salmon. During summer months residents are busy putting salmon up for the winter by smoking, canning or freezing caught fish. The fall time keeps us occupied with berry picking and moose hunting. During winter there is ice fishing and traveling to other villages via snow-machines, and spring time brings the return of the birds.
Rocky Mountain School honors and recognizes that for our community to thrive, we commit to the following shared responsibilities: strengthening relationships; engaged communication; and working collectively with our students, families and community members to support the learning and achievement of our children.
